What are Your Breast Augmentation Options?

What are Your Breast Augmentation Options? One of the reasons behind the popularity of breast augmentation surgery is that the procedure is fairly customizable to suit the individual needs of a patient.

Double board certified cosmetic and oral & maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Landon McLain provides breast augmentation to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding communities. It is important to choose the right options in breast augmentation because it will have an impact on the final results of the surgery.

Options in Implant Type

The patient will have a choice between saline implants, silicone implants, and ultra-cohesive silicone implants. All three options are approved by the FDA, and the cosmetic surgeon will explain the pros and cons of each. Implant sizes are also available in the range of 120 cc to 960 cc, and options in implant shapes include round shape and anatomical shape.

Many women today prefer silicone gel implants because of their more natural touch and feel and better resilience. Advanced qualities such as highly cohesive silicone implants are now becoming popular because these offer superior aesthetics and more safety in the event of implant damage or leakage.

Options in Implant Placement

Subglandular Placement

The implants are placed below the mammary gland but above the pectoral muscle in this option. This surgical option involves minimal post-op discomfort and a shorter recovery period. The breast musculature is not disrupted in this case, and only the pliable skin and tissue are manipulated.

Implants are easier to place, and the surgeon can create a better cleavage if the patient wants. The procedure is overall less invasive with subglandular placement of implants.

Submuscular Placement

The implant will be placed under the pectoral muscle in this option. Nearly two-thirds of the implant will be covered by the muscle. Results are aesthetically more appealing in this case, particularly for women with naturally small breasts. Implant flaws such as edges or ripples are hidden more easily under the pectoral muscle.

With silicone implants, results can be superior with submuscular placement. Incision Options

Areolar Incision

The incision will be made along the lower half of the areolar border. This is a preferred incision option because the subsequent scar will blend it with the areola line.

Inframammary Incision

The incision in this case will be placed at the base or the crease of the breast where it is easier to conceal. This option is more commonly used for silicone implants.

Transaxillary Incision

This involves an incision in the armpit. For saline implant placement, this incision is more commonly used because the implant can be inserted in a deflated condition and filled later.

Transumbilical Incision (TUBA)

In rare situations, the surgeon may use a TUBA incision, which will be made around the navel area to insert the implants.
