There are many ways to remove body hair, from waxing to threading to shaving. But laser hair removal is one of the few options that offers a more permanent approach to getting rid of unwanted body hair.

Laser hair removal works by sending the light of a laser through the pigment in the hair. It is more than just zapping unwanted hair. It is a medical procedure, which Dr. McLain is trained to perform.

There are some things you will have to do before undergoing laser hair removal, which Dr. McLain will discuss with you at your consultation. Some of these include the following:

• Limit plucking, waxing and electrolysis for six weeks

• Avoid sun exposure six weeks before and six weeks after the procedure

When you go in for your treatment, the hair will be trimmed to a few millimeters above the skin’s surface. Usually a topical numbing medicine is applied 20 to 30 minutes before the procedure to help with the sting of laser pulses.

The laser equipment will be adjusted according to the color, thickness and location of the hair being treated as well as your skin color.

Lasers are useful for removing hair from the face, chin, arm, underarm, leg, bikini, and other areas. Benefits of laser hair removal include:

• Speed: each laser pulse takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time. Small areas, such as the upper lip, can be treated in less than a minute.

• Precision: lasers can target dark, coarse hairs while leaving surrounding skin undamaged.

• Predictability: most patients have permanent hair loss after three to seven sessions.

In addition to clearer, smoother skin and permanent hair reduction, laser hair removal also can reduce in-grown hairs, which means less irritation of the skin.
