Botox vs. Xeomin to Smooth Out Wrinkles

Botox vs. Xeomin

Botox vs. Xeomin to Smooth Out WrinklesCosmetic medicine has made injectables popular for promoting younger and smoother looking skin. Botox and Xeomin are two injectable treatments commonly used for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Both Botox and Xeomin contain botulinum toxin type A. This is a neurotoxin created by Clostridium botulinum, a type of bacterial species. The neurotoxin works by blocking neuromuscular signals for relaxing targeted muscles at the site of the injection.

These injectable treatments may contain the same active compound, but they are different in their uses and formulation. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides Botox and Xeomin wrinkle reduction injections to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Main Differences between Botox and Xeomin

The primary difference between Botox and Xeomin is that the latter contains a more naked or raw form of botulinum toxin. This is unlike Botox, which contains accessory proteins. Xeomin is designed for delivering the toxin without any protein additives. This purified structure prevents antibody resistance, which is an increasing problem with injectables.

Xeomin, manufactured by Merz Pharma, can be stored in a refrigerator, freezer, or at room temperature before using. Botox, manufactured by Allergan, needs to be refrigerated before use.

Botox and Xeomin: What Conditions Can They Treat?

In 2010, Xeomin was FDA approved for treating fine lines and glabellar lines along with a number of other conditions. Xeomin can temporarily get rid of forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet too as a cosmetic treatment. It can treat excessive salivation and drooling along with abnormal muscle contractions of the eyelids, limbs, and the neck.

Initially, Botox was FDA approved in 2002 for cosmetically reducing frown lines on the face. It can be used for addressing other conditions as well, such as urinary incontinence and excessive sweating. Botox is also proved for treating migraines and headaches. Botox, like Xeomin, can treat abnormal contractions and muscle spasms of the neck, limbs, and eyelids.

Which Injection is More Effective?

Botox and Xeomin are both effective treatments for cosmetic purposes. They are convenient treatments where administration is concerned as compared to invasive procedures, such as plastic surgery. Both Botox and Xeomin start working once they are injected within the muscle. For cosmetic purposes, the complete effect may not be seen until 7 to 14 days after the injection.

Is Botox and Xeomin the Same?

Both Botox and Xeomin contain botulinum toxin. However, they are not the same. Xeomin, unlike Botox, contains a different form of botulinum toxin, which is free from accessory proteins. Xeomin has less storage restrictions, which means that it doesn’t require refrigeration.

Longevity – Botox vs. Xeomin

Botulinum toxin injections can last for at least three months. Some people may experience results that last for 4 – 5 months depending on the dose injected and the treated area. As per a few studies, women that received Xeomin for improving glabellar lines had longer-lasting results as compared to the ones that got Botox.
