What is Breast Revision Plastic Surgery?

What is Breast Revision Plastic Surgery?Breast revision plastic surgery usually refers to a secondary breast augmentation procedure aimed at correcting the complications that may have occurred after the primary breast implant surgery. The revision procedure may involve removal or replacement of breast implants.

Breast revision may also be performed as a secondary implant-based breast reconstruction surgery. Some women may want breast revision just to change the implant size or shape for cosmetic considerations, even when the original implants are working well.

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will determine the patient’s candidacy for breast revision surgery. The implant replacement surgery is often simpler than implant removal in case of breast revision.

The accomplished and terrific Dr. Landon McLain of McLain Surgical Arts provides breast revision surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding communities in The Heart of Dixie.

Implant Replacement

If breast revision becomes necessary following a capsular contracture, causing the implants to lose their shape, position or become damaged, hardened or rippled, a woman may consider implant replacement. In rare cases, implant failure may occur quickly after the primary implant surgery.

Breast implant replacement surgery will not be very different from the primary breast augmentation. The surgeon’s first goal will be to utilize the old incision lines to remove the damaged implants and replace them with new ones. This will minimize the chances of any new scars. But in a situation where the patient wants to choose different size or shape of implants, new incisions may have to be placed to customize breast implant pockets.

Breast implant replacement may be performed along with breast lift in some cases to create ideal outcomes. Such a combination is more appropriate if the patient has used primary implants for many years and aging effects have gradually resulted in sagging breasts.

Implant Removal vs. Replacement

Compared to implant removal, implant replacement surgery is less complicated and has a reduced risk of bleeding and infection. But implant removal may be a preferred option if the patient is suffering from pain symptoms, arthritis or another autoimmune disease.

The focused and innovative Dr. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and other suburbs and communities in this part of the fantastic and economically growing state of Alabama for breast implant revision surgery.

Recovery

If the scar tissue is removed along with the breast implant in a breast revision surgery, the post-surgical discomfort may be slightly higher. In simple cases of implant replacement, the recovery will be quicker and easier than the primary breast augmentation.

Most patients will be able to resume their regular activities in about a week to 10 days. Breasts are likely to remain sore for a few days after replacement, similar to what the patient experienced following the original breast augmentation. The surgeon may prescribe mild pain medications in the first week.

Breast Lift along with Breast Revision

If the original implants are large sized, and are eventually replaced with smaller implants, it can create a sagging appearance. A skilled and respectable surgeon will ensure that breasts remain as attractive as before, and may recommend a combination of breast revision and breast lift in such cases.
