Skin Removal Surgery

Loose or hanging skin tissue can become bothersome for some people due to both cosmetic and physical reasons. You may experience discomfort, chafing, skin irritation, and frequent infections in areas where excess skin is present. You may consider a skin removal surgery to restore your attractive, youthful appearance, and obtain relief from physical discomfort.

Many people choose a skin removal cosmetic surgery after a massive weight loss or following multiple pregnancies or simply due to the aging process. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides skin removal surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding communities.

Loose Skin Problems after Weight Loss

Following a bariatric surgery, you may be able to achieve a dramatic weight loss over a short period of time. However, your skin may have become inelastic or overstretch, and as a result, it will tend to appear droopy in certain areas that have deflated after weight loss. The abdomen, breasts, buttocks, thighs, and upper arms are commonly affected by this condition.

It can be difficult to eliminate this excess loose skin simply through diet and exercise. Fortunately, skin removal surgery is a time-tested and well-recognized cosmetic procedure to get rid of this problem and restore a tighter, smoother skin appearance.

Panniculectomy

Loose and excessive skin tissue in the lower abdominal area may sometimes begin to hang above the pubic line and even go up to the thighs. Panniculectomy is a skin removal procedure to reduce the pannus or hanging skin and restore a pleasing appearance. The procedure can be combined with tummy tuck, depending on your unique needs.

Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck cosmetic surgery is a popular procedure to remove sagging skin and tighten the underlying loose abdominal muscles. You can achieve a firm and youthful looking abdomen with this procedure. The location and length of the incision (the tummy tuck technique) will depend on the amount of loose skin to be removed. Raising of the belly button to a more youthful level may also be involved in this surgery.

Brachioplasty

Brachioplasty or arm lift cosmetic procedure is often a part of a comprehensive skin removal surgery. It will eliminate sagging skin from the underside of the upper arms. Your surgeon will create an incision across the bottom of your upper arm or within the underarm. This will be decided according to the amount of excess skin that must be removed. Your surgeon will firm up the supportive tissue and give shape to your arm contours through the incisions.

Thighplasty

A thigh lift or thighplasty procedure will remove excess skin and stubborn fat deposits to reshape, contour, and firm up the inner or outer thighs. A crescent shaped incision may be placed to remove sagging skin from your upper inner thighs. Based on your skin removal needs, your surgeon may also recommend a medial or lateral thigh lift, or a combination of different techniques.

Buttock Lift

Sagging or loose skin in your rear end can be successfully removed with a Brazilian butt lift or a traditional buttock lift surgery. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and nearby areas for skin removal surgery.

Breast Implants

One of the most basic decisions you need to take before your breast augmentation surgery is picking the breast implants. While size, shape and type of the implants are important, you also need to consider the implant profile. Breast implant profile refers to the kind of forward projection it will provide from the chest wall.

McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides breast augmentation to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Popular Breast Implant Profiles

Moderate profile implants

Moderate profile implants have a wide base and do not offer a lot of forward projection. They are flatter than other profile types, but offer the most natural looking breasts. They are suitable for women with regular-sized chests and shoulders. Discuss with your surgeon if you are a candidate for these implants for your breast enhancement cosmetic surgery.

Moderate plus profile implants

These are between moderate and high profile where forward projection is concerned. They have a slightly narrower base as compared to moderate profile implants. Women with these implants get a little extra fullness in their upper breast poles. The look is similar to wearing a permanent push-up bra.

Broad chested and wide framed women are suitable for these implants. They can fill out their breast dimensions without having to get excessively large implants. The implant looks natural in thin, flat chested women as well. However, size options may get limited in narrow chested women who may find the base diameter of the implant too wide.

High profile implants

High profile breast implants offer more enhanced forward projection. These implants have narrow base diameters and provide more fullness in the upper poles. This helps in creating extra cleavage. Breasts appear rounder and fuller in high profile implants, which are ideally recommended for women with narrow chest walls.

High profile implants offer more forward projection as compared to moderate profile implants. They have more anterior projection and provide dramatic results. They are best suited for women looking for rounder and forward projecting breasts that don’t necessarily need to appear natural.

Ultra-high or Extra-high profile implants

Ultra-high breast profiles offer the least natural shape and appear the roundest. They have the smallest base diameters for creating excessive projection. There is superior upper pole fullness and more cleavage. However, the implants are not for everyone. They are suited for women desiring unnatural, projecting, and very large breasts.

Picking the Right Breast Implant Profile

Your cosmetic surgeon will consider several factors when helping you pick the right implant profile. They will evaluate the existing breast size and shape of your body first. They will also measure the existing width of your breasts. This is done to ensure the implants chosen provide the most natural-looking results.

Generally, surgeons recommend choosing a size marginally smaller than the existing width for natural appearing results. Choosing implants is personal decision. But you can use breast implant sizers at the surgeon’s office to better visualize the expected results from your breast augmentation cosmetic surgery.

Breast Augmentation Mastopexy (BAM)

Many women want to increase the size of their breasts or enhance its shape for cosmetic purposes. You can correct sagging breasts and enhance their shape while addressing other issues with a breast augmentation mastopexy procedure. BAM essentially combines two highly popular breast surgeries in one: breast lift and augmentation.

The combined procedure is often more effective in creating more comprehensive and natural looking results. Your surgeon will determine during the initial consultation whether you make for an ideal candidate for this cosmetic cosmetic surgery or not.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides breast augmentation mastopexy to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Surgical Technique for BAM

Breast augmentation mastopexy procedure utilizes several different cosmetic surgery techniques. Your surgeon will use the most appropriate techniques to attain your individual aesthetic goals and requirements. The cosmetic surgeon will also take into account your breast anatomy and extent of droopiness while determining the best technique. Incisions don’t need to be large in cases where breast sagginess is limited.

Your surgeon will place particular attention on creating incisions in discreet locations so that any scarring is minimally visible. You should be able to wear clothes of your choice, including bikinis and low cut tops following your surgery (after post-surgical healing).

Incisions are usually placed in the following ways:

Breast Augmentation Mastopexy Surgical Procedure

You will be placed under general anesthesia for the purpose of the surgery, which usually takes 2 to 3 hours. Once you are under anesthesia, the surgeon will start making the incisions. Generally, the breast implants are placed before addressing droopy breasts.

Your surgeon’s primary goal will be to use the same incisions for inserting implants and lifting the breasts. This will help reduce scarring while making the surgery less invasive. The surgeon will excise excess breast tissue to create a pocket in your breasts. This is where the implants get placed under your pectoral muscles.

The cosmetic surgeon will make sure the breast shape and symmetry is according to the pre-surgery plan. The next step is to trim any loose skin and reshape the breasts. This is done by manipulating the breast tissue. If you want your nipple-areola complex will also be resized and repositioned during this step to make them appear more youthful and natural.

The surgeon will proceed to close the incisions with sutures once the surgery is completed. Your breasts will be wrapped in bandages and temporary drain tubes may be used to collect excess fluids for a few days. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and nearby areas for breast augmentation mastopexy.

Laser Hair Removal | Huntsville Med Spa | Medical Spa | Plastic SurgeonThere are many ways to remove body hair, from waxing to threading to shaving. But laser hair removal is one of the few options that offers a more permanent approach to getting rid of unwanted body hair.

Laser hair removal works by sending the light of a laser through the pigment in the hair. It is more than just zapping unwanted hair. It is a medical procedure, which Dr. McLain is trained to perform.

There are some things you will have to do before undergoing laser hair removal, which Dr. McLain will discuss with you at your consultation. Some of these include the following:

When you go in for your treatment, the hair will be trimmed to a few millimeters above the skin’s surface. Usually a topical numbing medicine is applied 20 to 30 minutes before the procedure to help with the sting of laser pulses.

The laser equipment will be adjusted according to the color, thickness and location of the hair being treated as well as your skin color.

Lasers are useful for removing hair from the face, chin, arm, underarm, leg, bikini, and other areas. Benefits of laser hair removal include:

In addition to clearer, smoother skin and permanent hair reduction, laser hair removal also can reduce in-grown hairs, which means less irritation of the skin.

Dr. McLain will discuss all of your best treatment options and tell you what to expect at your consultation.

Tummy Tuck with Liposuction | Huntsville Plastic Surgery | Scottsboro SurgeonAre diet and exercise not giving you the flat tummy that you would like to have? Then you may want to consider a tummy tuck.

Abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck, will flatten the abdomen and tighten the abdominal muscles.   It is not the same as liposuction, although you may add the liposuction procedure to the tummy tuck surgery.

A tummy tuck will remove excess skin while tightening loose or separated abdominal muscles to give you a more smooth and toned physique. However, if you also have areas of stubborn fat, such as love handles, a tummy tuck alone is not likely to be the most effective option.

Liposuction, a body contouring procedure, uses suction to remove pockets of fat that are not responding to diet and exercise. While liposuction can get rid of love handles, back rolls and baby fat, it won’t address excess skin or muscle laxity, which often accompany a pregnancy or big weight loss.

So, to achieve your best look, combining the two procedures may be your best option. Dr. McLain will discuss your best options during your consultation.

There are benefits to adding liposuction to the tummy tuck including you will only need to schedule one surgery, and you will have only one recovery period.

Combining a tummy tuck with liposuction can maximize your body contouring results in a way that isn’t possible with either procedure on its own. Excess fat and loose skin often go hand in hand, so treating both of these cosmetic concerns at the same time is often the most efficient and effective approach.

Nipple Reduction Surgery

Breasts differ largely in their appearance, shape, and size. In many cases, the nipples and areolae or pigmented areas around the nipples also vary in nature. While there is no medical problem with such asymmetry, some women may feel it reduces the attractiveness of their breasts.

Areola reduction surgery can help you achieve more symmetrical areolae. In this procedure, the surgeon will decrease the diameter of oversized areolae to bring them into balance with the breast size. This surgery can be a standalone procedure although it is also possible to combine it with a breast reduction or augmentation or a breast lift.

Double board certified oral & maxillofacial and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides nipple and areola reduction surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Is Areola Reduction Right for You?

If you answer yes to any of the following questions, you are a good candidate for areola reduction surgery.

Areola reduction surgery in women is done only after the breasts have completely grown. In men, it may be done at an earlier age.

Things to Know About the Surgery

Areola reduction surgery is a safe and proven procedure that takes around an hour to complete. It may be done at the hospital or in the surgeon’s office. A local anesthetic is commonly used, but sometimes, the surgeon may see it fit to use general anesthesia.

One the effects of the anesthetic kick in, the surgeon makes a cut along the circumference of the existing areola to remove a doughnut-sized bit of tissue. This cut is placed in the pigmented region so that any scar that remains is rendered less visible.

Next, the surgeon places a permanent suture within the breast to secure the new areola in place and make sure it doesn’t stretch over time. They will close the initial cut using sutures and apply a surgical dressing. You may be advised to wear a postsurgical bra to support your breasts for a few weeks.

What to Expect Post-surgery

Healing from areola reduction surgery does not take beyond a week. Most people get back to work in a day or two. Some bruising and swelling may be present for the first few days, and this will obscure the effects of the surgery. Once the swelling has reduced, the breasts settle into position and then, you will be able to appreciate the surgery outcome. The scar left around the areola may take up to a year to heal.

Double board certified oral & maxillofacial and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and nearby areas for nipple and areola reduction surgery.

Mole Removal

Most moles are harmless and do not need any treatment. A mole is likely to be dangerous if you find it looking different from your other moles. Moles that appear after the age of 25 are more at risk. If you notice that your mole has changed in size, shape, color, and height, or has started to itch, ooze, bleed, or hurt, it is time to have it examined by a surgeon.

Double board certified oral & maxillofacial and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides mole and skin tag removal procedures to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding communities.

ABCDE Signs of Dangerous Moles

If you notice any of the following characters in your moles, it could be a sign that your mole is dangerous.

If you notice any of these signs, consult a doctor at the earliest for an expert examination and diagnosis.

Mole Treatment Methods

If your surgeon suspects a mole to be malignant or otherwise abnormal, they will cut or shave off the mole in a biopsy. It will then be sent to a laboratory to test for the presence of cancer.  Often, a little of the normal skin are around the mole will also be removed and the wound is then closed with sutures.

Skin Tags Treatment

Skin tags are small pieces of tissue connected to the skin through a narrow stem. They are often common in elderly persons and in women who have gained weight. Skin tags mostly occur in the groin, below the breasts, on the back, neck, and chest and in the armpits.

Skin tags are harmless, and it is best to leave them alone if they are not causing any discomfort. But if they get enmeshed in your clothes or jewelry and cause pain, or if you find them a cosmetic problem, you can have them removed. Your surgeon will cut off a skin tag with a scissors or scalpel, or use an electric current to burn it off, or freeze the skin tag causing it to fall off.

Lentigo Treatment

A brown-colored skin spot that appears darker than the other skin is known as a lentigo. This condition may run in the family. The major cause of lentigines is exposure to sunlight, so they are often found on the hands and face. Occasionally, radiation therapy may also be a cause.

Lentigines may be treated using skin creams such as bleaching agents or retinoids. Laser surgery and cryosurgery or freezing with super cold liquid nitrogen are other possible treatment methods for lentigines.

Double board certified oral & maxillofacial and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and nearby areas for mole and skin tag removal procedures.

Preparing For Breast Revision Cosmetic Surgery | Huntsville | DecaturA breast lift, also known as mastopexy, raises the breasts by removing excess skin and sagging tissues and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.

A breast lift can improve your figure providing a breast profile that is more uplifted and youthful. Women’s breasts change as they age and especially after childbirth. The changes and loss of skin elasticity can be caused by:

Dr. McLain will discuss with you what a breast lift can and cannot do. This surgery can change the size and shape of the breasts, but often will not restore fullness in the upper pole of the breast in a lasting fashion.  This usually requires the addition of an implant which may be done at the time of the lift.

By removing excess, stretched out skin, removing/reshaping the breast tissue, and raising the nipple and areola into a more forward position, Dr. McLain can create a more youthful breast contour.

Oral surgeon

Oral surgeons are trained to perform dental surgical procedures related to the mouth, jaws, teeth, and face. Unlike a general dentist, an oral surgeon specializes in oral and maxillofacial (relating to the jaw and face) surgery.  Oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete a minimum of four to six years of surgical training on top of their four years of dental school.

McLain Surgical Arts, led by Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides advanced surgical and non-surgical oral procedures to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Areas of Focus

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is trained and equipped to provide patients with a number of advanced procedures, such as:

Tooth Extractions

Tooth extraction is the most common form of oral surgery, and many people will probably see an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for the first time to have a tooth extracted. Tooth extraction may be necessary if the tooth is decayed beyond repair, is an impacted wisdom tooth (or partially erupted), or as part of orthodontic treatment to correct overcrowded teeth.

Corrective Jaw Surgery

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon may perform corrective jaw surgery or orthognathic surgery to treat TMJ disorders, trauma to the jaw, incorrect bite or malocclusion, and poor jaw position which causes disproportionate facial appearance. If excessive tooth wear has occurred because of grinding or clenching of teeth, it may also be improved with corrective jaw surgery.

Dental Implants

The most effective way to replace missing teeth is dental implants surgery. Dental implants can also be used to provide stability to dentures. Oral surgeons are trained to perform this procedure. When you work with an experienced oral surgeon who has a very high success rate with implants, the results will be more sustainable and predictable.

Facial Cosmetic Procedures

With a background in dental surgery, a qualified oral and maxillofacial surgeon may also perform a number of facial cosmetic surgery procedures. They can help correct the aesthetic aspects as well as functional issues related to the face, mouth, jaws, and teeth.

Developmental Conditions

Surgical repairs of the cleft palate and cleft lip can be transformative for a child experiencing these deformities. Apart from the cosmetic benefits, a cleft lip and palate repair will provide the child with a better ability to drink or eat and will also support optimal speech.

Oral Cancer

Oral cancer may occur when abnormal or malignant cells occur within the lining of the gums, cheeks, lips, tongue, or roof of the mouth. In many cases, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon may also treat oropharyngeal cancer, which impacts the soft palate, the back and side walls of the throat, the end portion of the tongue and the tonsils.

Facial Injury and Trauma

Fractures of the lower and upper jaws and orbital fractures around the eye can be treated by an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon. They can also treat facial lacerations. Their expert knowledge of dental occlusion enables them to understand and repair complex facial fractures.

Dr. Landon D. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and nearby areas for a wide range of oral and maxillofacial procedures.
