Saline Implants vs Silicone Implants

Saline Implants vs Silicone ImplantsPatients considering breast augmentation have the option of choosing between silicone and saline breast implants. During your consultation, your surgeon will explain the differences between saline and silicone breast implants and help you decide which option is best for you. McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides breast augmentation surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Appearance

Silicone implant shells are designed to sit over the natural curvature of the breasts, mimicking natural fat tissue and giving a more natural appearance. Saline breast implants are often over-filled and appear rounder, fuller, and firmer.

Texture and Touch

Silicone and saline breast implants differ in texture, with silicone implants feeling closer to soft, natural fat in the breasts. Saline implants feel firmer.

Surgical Incisions

Saline and silicone breast implants are placed in different areas of the chest, and each type of implant requires a different surgical incision. Silicone implants are pre-filled at the factory and require a larger incision for placement. Saline implants are inserted into the chest cavity before being filled with saline solution during surgery, requiring a smaller incision.

Which Last Longer?

Saline and silicone breast implants are durable, and generally last about the same amount of time. With use of either implant, the patient will need to have them removed or replaced after a number of years.

Rippling and Rupture

It is always a possibility for breast implants to rupture, although it is uncommon.

Silicone implants can pose a danger in the event of rupture, as the silicone gel may seep into the body. Since saline solution can be absorbed by the body, saline implants are safer. Capsular contracture or use of incorrectly sized implants can cause rippling, and is an equal risk with either implant type. In extreme cases, rippling can appear on the surface of the skin.
