Changing the Shape of Your Face with Rhinoplasty | HuntsvilleAre you ready to make some changes to your appearance? Do you have trouble breathing through your nose? Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, may be the answer.

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure used for altering and reconstructing the nose. The motivation for rhinoplasty may be to change the appearance of the nose, improve breathing, or both.

There are two types of plastic surgery used in a rhinoplasty depending upon what is the ultimate goal and outcome that you would like:

  • Reconstructive surgery restores the form and functions of the nose.
  • Cosmetic surgery changes the appearance of the nose.

This surgical procedure may enhance facial harmony and the proportions of your nose. It can also correct impaired breathing caused by structural defects in the nose.

Here are some things that rhinoplasty can treat:

  • Nose size in relation to facial balance
  • Nose profile with visible humps or depressions on the bridge
  • Nose width at the bridge
  • Nasal tip that is enlarged, drooping or hooked
  • Nostrils that are large, wide, or upturned
  • Nasal asymmetry

The upper part of the structure of the nose is bone, and the lower part is cartilage. Rhinoplasty can change bone, cartilage, skin or all three.

Rhinoplasty may also be used to correct a deviated septum. Dr. McLain will examine your nasal structure as it relates to airflow and breathing. A deviated septum is one of the most common causes of breathing impairment.

Should he determine that rhinoplasty can help with your breathing, Dr. McLain will adjust the nasal structure to produce better alignment, which will make breathing a lot easier.

When planning rhinoplasty, Dr. McLain will consider your other facial features, the skin on your nose, and what you would like to change. If you are a candidate for surgery, Dr. McLain will develop a customized plan for you.

At your consultation, Dr. McLain will discuss with you your goals and your overall health. He will also answer all of your questions as you consider whether rhinoplasty is right for you.

How Long Can I Return To Regular Activity After A BBL? | HuntsvilleBrazilian Butt Lift or BBL is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure among both women and men. The procedure is designed to sculpt the lower body by increasing the size of the buttocks. Most patients, understandably, are curious about the recovery timeline and when they can resume regular activity following a BBL.

In majority of cases, patients need between 4 to 6 weeks to recover completely from the BBL procedure. While healing is complete, your body may continue absorbing injected fat for a few more months. You should be able to resume a sedentary lifestyle after 4 to 6 weeks. Based on this, it may take up to 8 weeks before you can start exercising.

McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides Brazilian butt lift surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Resuming Regular Routine Following a BBL

BBL patients are advised to wait at least 4 to 6 weeks before they resume normal routine. You need to allow your body enough time to heal and recover following a plastic surgery. It will take a few weeks for the transferred fat cells to stabilize at the buttock area. Downtime ensures the butt establishes blood supply. Exercising or performing strenuous activities may impact fat transfer and affect the overall BBL results.

Activity Timeline Following a BBL

1 – 2 Week Mark

Brazilian Butt Lift patients should desist from placing any pressure on the buttocks in the first two weeks of recovery. Your surgeon will allow you to sit during this time only when absolutely necessary. You would be asked to use a donut shaped pillow to prevent putting any direct pressure on the buttocks. You would need to sleep on your stomach or side to avoid straining the posterior.

3 Week Mark

You should be able to resume less-intensive activities during the third week of recovery. You would need to make use of a soft cushion while sitting. Refrain from putting any pressure on the backside during this period. If you are healing well, your surgeon may clear you for very light cardiovascular activities, such as elliptical exercise and walking. The focus should be on weight training instead of aerobic activity.

4 – 5 Week Mark

Patients would need to continue using a cushion during this period when sitting for extended periods. You may be able to add bicycling and faster-paced walking. Your doctor may clear you to go to work at this time if you can use a soft cushion while sitting. Relaxed activities, such as swimming is advisable.

6 – 8 Week Mark

Regular routine, including vigorous activities, may be allowed from six weeks if your body continues to respond well to the procedure. You should be able to resume jogging and strenuous chores at work. It is important that you give your body enough time to heal since the grafted fat behaves in the same manner as fat cells. Weight fluctuations may cause an increase or decrease in the buttocks volume.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and nearby areas for Brazilian butt lift surgery.

Fat Transfer to Breast vs. Implants | Huntsville Cosmetic SurgeryBreast augmentation has consistently been a popular cosmetic procedure across the world. Pertaining to this, a crucial decision faced by all women seeking to enhance the shape and size of their breasts is whether to choose implants or fat grafting. Both procedures are safe and offer high-quality results. Moreover, they come with their unique characteristics.

During your initial consultation, your surgeon will help you decide between getting a fat graft or an implant-based breast augmentation. McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides breast augmentation with fat transfer and breast augmentation with implants to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding communities.

Advantages of Fat Grafting Breast Augmentation

Fat transfer involves the body’s natural fat cells to augment the breasts. Fat is the most natural filling material and one of the safest. There is little risk of allergic reactions and the procedure can make your breasts appear and feel more natural. You don’t need to worry about scarring when it comes to fat injections. There is no long-term breast thinning or rippling either that is a common risk of breast implants.

Limitations of Fat Grafting Breast Augmentation

Every surgical procedure carries risks. Fat transfer to breasts might interfere with breast cancer screening in a few cases. There is a risk of calcification. The procedure is not recommended for patients seeking a significant change in their breast size.

In most cases, the cost of fat grafting comes to be more than that of breast augmentation. There is also a risk of nodules and lump formation in the breasts. Irregularities and indentations may occur at the donor site if the procedure is performed by an inexperienced surgeon.

Advantages of Breast Implants

Breast implant procedures have been improved over the years to provide predictable and reliable changes in size and appearance. Breast implants give increased control over the breast size. Most implants in use today offer natural-feeling and safe results. Fat grafting involves removing fat at a donor site. Implants don’t require such additional procedures. Implants can also be removed easily during a corrective surgery.

Limitations of Breast Implants

There is a high risk of leakage and rupture in breast implants. They need to be changed after a few years. There is a risk of rippling and visibility as well, especially when the implants placed are too large for the breast tissue. There is a risk of capsular contracture in breast implants. This is when the scar tissue thickens around the implant causing distortion and hardening.

Fat Grafting vs. Breast Implants – Which is Better for Me?

There are several factors that need to be considered while choosing between the two. You should consider fat grafting if want breasts that look and appear more natural. There is the added benefit of contouring another body part through liposuction, such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks. Breast implants are the right choice if you are seeking a more dramatic increase in size. However, your breast tissue should have enough elasticity to accommodate the implants for safe results.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and nearby areas for breast augmentation with fat transfer and breast augmentation with implants surgery.

Are your eyes making you look tired? Do you have more difficulty getting eye makeup to look as it once did? Is your vision impaired because your eyelids are sagging?

These are all reasons to consider eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty.

Whether you want to improve your appearance, or you are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids – eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes.

As we age, our eyelids stretch, and the muscles supporting them weaken. Surgery to correct this can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both.

Some things that eyelid surgery can correct include:

  • Bags under the eyes
  • Fatty deposits that appear as puffiness on the eyelids
  • Loose or sagging skin on the eyelids that sometimes causes vision problems
  • Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
  • Excess skin and wrinkles that appear below the lower lids

The best candidates for an eye lift are people who are in good health and who have a realistic expectation of what they want. Most are 35 years or older, but if baggy or droopy eyelids run in your family, you may decide to have the procedure at an earlier age.

Eyelid surgery won’t get rid of dark circles under the eyes, crow’s feet or other facial wrinkles. It is often done along with other procedures such as laser resurfacing, filler injections, or forehead lifts.

Dr. McLain will discuss all of this in your consultation. He will help you decide what you want and what you can expect from your eyelid surgery. He will also tell you what you will need to do pre-op and after your surgery.

After eyelid surgery, expect to stay home from work and limit your activities for several days while your eyelids heal. You may also experience dry eyes for a few days.

If you are considering eyelid surgery, contact Dr. McLain’s office to schedule your consultation, today.

How to Know If It’s Time for a Brow Lift | Huntsville Cosmetic Surgeon A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, reduces lines and wrinkles, raises sagging eyebrows, and improves frown lines. It also raises sagging eyebrows that can cause hooding, either from aging or genetics.

The best age for a brow lift varies from person to person. It will depend on your genetics, diet and skincare routine, and is a common procedure for people between the ages of 40 and 65.

As we age, wrinkles appear on the forehead. Frown lines between the brows – also known as “elevens” can make us look angry or too serious all the time. As we age, the skin relaxes, and this can give us a tired look. This also causes the brow to drop, hooding our upper eyelids.

There are two methods to lift your forehead and eyebrow areas:

  • Classic lift: this involves one continuous cut beginning at the level of your ears and going around your hairline.
  • Endoscopic lift: Dr. McLain will make a few shorter cuts in your scalp, then insert a scope to help make the changes.

Because the cuts are smaller, the endoscopic lift is less invasive than the classic lift. You will have minimal scarring and a shorter recovery time.

This surgery is often done on an outpatient basis and usually takes about two hours to perform. When you have your initial consultation with Dr. McLain, he will discuss all of this, as well as your goals for having this surgery.

Your recovery time will depend upon which surgery type you had. In either case, you will have stitches or staples that will need to be removed in about a week post op. You will have some swelling and bruising, which should lessen as the days pass.

If you’re tired of looking tired, contact Dr. McLain’s office and make an appointment for your consultation. He and his staff will be happy to answer your questions and guide you to the result your looking for.

At what age should you consider having a cosmetic surgery procedure? There is no right or wrong answer; it usually depends upon what you think is the right time for you.

Whatever your age, when you’re ready, Dr. Landon McLain has the skills and experience to bring you optimal results with every procedure.

Teenagers

While cosmetic surgery is not common amongst teenagers, there are good reasons for considering surgery at this age. Rhinoplasty is the most common teen surgery. It is performed after the nose reaches its full adult size. For girls, this is usually at 14 or 15, and 17 for boys. Male breast reduction is another popular choice for teenagers, as well as otoplasty to correct prominent ears for both boys and girls.

The 20s

Far and away, breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic procedure among women in their twenties. Nose reshaping – rhinoplasty is another surgery that is popular for women in their twenties.

The 30s

While Botox and fillers are popular among all age groups, the thirties are a big year for Botox. This is a time during which you begin to notice lines and wrinkles are developing. Though the signs are generally minor at this age, early treatment goes a long way in slowing down the visible aging process.

Many women in their thirties who are finished having children will opt for a Mommy Makeover. Breast augmentation, tummy tuck, liposuction and breast lift surgery are all very popular in this age group.

The 40s and 50s

This is a time when you begin to see the real signs of aging. Blepharoplasty, or an eye lift, is very popular among men and women in this age group. Dr. McLain removes excess skin, fat and muscle from the eyelid area, and it can be very rejuvenating.

BOTOX and soft-tissue fillers are also a hot choice in this age group to help slow the signs of aging.  Some patients will need surgical correction starting at this age… including facelifts and forehead lifts.

55+

By far, the most popular procedure after one reaches 55, and thereafter, is the facelift. The forehead lift is a close second. These procedures tighten sagging skin and muscle for a much more youthful appearance. BOTOX and fillers may also be used in conjunction with these procedures to give you that younger look.

Whatever your age, when you feel like it is time to make changes that will leave you looking and feeling younger, contact Dr. McLain’s office to schedule your consultation appointment.

Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty - Which is Right for You? | Huntsville SurgeryRhinoplasty and Septoplasty – Which is Right for You?

So you are ready to change the look of your face, particularly your nose. Perhaps you think it is too big for your face, or it has a bump, or is crooked. Then you may be a candidate for rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, is a plastic surgery procedure for altering and reconstructing the nose. While rhinoplasty may be used to change the appearance of the nose, it may also improve breathing.

What rhinoplasty can do:

  • Change nose size in relation to facial balance
  • Change nose width at the bridge or in the size and position of the nostril
  • Improve your profile getting rid of visible humps or depressions on the bridge
  • Improve a nasal tip that is large or bulbous
  • Improve nasal asymmetry

Keeping in mind that everyone’s face is asymmetric to some degree, the goal with rhinoplasty is to create facial balance and correct proportion.

Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to straighten the bone and cartilage between your two nostrils known as the septum. This surgery is used to correct a deviated septum.

A deviated, or crooked septum occurs when the septum is shifted towards one side of the nasal cavity. This can cause difficulty breathing and reduce airflow due to blockage of the nasal airway.

During this surgery, the septum is straightened and repositioned to the middle of the nose. The procedure may include cutting and removing parts of the septum before reinserting them into the correction position.

You may find that you will want rhinoplasty to change facial symmetry, but you also need septoplasty to correct your deviated septum. These are often performed during the same surgery.

Dr. McLain will do a full physical examination to determine what is best for you. He will also discuss your goals in wanting to improve your facial symmetry. So whether you need one or both procedures, he will be able to tell what will work best in your case.

Thigh Lift Surgery at McLain Surgical Arts | Huntsville Cosmetic SurgeryThigh Lift Surgery

When exercise and diet have failed in creating a more sculpted look, you may consider thigh lift surgery. This surgery reshapes the thighs by reducing excess skin and fat, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the thigh area.

This body contouring procedure is desirable after substantial weight loss or when dieting and exercise have failed to reduce excess tissue in the upper thighs.

You may want to consider a thigh lift when:

  • You want your thighs to have better proportional contour, and a firmer look and feel
  • You are distressed about loose, flabby skin on your thighs
  • If you have undergone bariatric surgery or a big weight loss
  • You have difficulty finding clothes that fit properly due to heavy thighs

Liposuction may also be used in conjunction with a thigh lift to get rid of excess fat. This surgery is often part of a “mommy makeover”, which many women have after they are done with child-bearing.

After having a thigh lift, your body will appear more shapely and proportional. Clothing and swimsuits will fit and look better. Your thighs will be firmer and more youthful.

If you are in good general health, have a positive attitude and realistic expectations, you are most likely a good candidate for this procedure.

During the surgical procedure, medications are administered. The options include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Dr. McLain will recommend the best option for you.

Dr. McLain will discuss with you your goals and the best option to reach those goals if you are considering having thigh lift surgery.

So, if fitness and weight control efforts have not achieved your goals for a body that is firmer, more youthful-looking and more proportionate to your overall body image, a surgical lift may be right for you.

Have you tried diet and exercise to get your fanny into shape? Are you not getting the results that you had hoped for? You may want to consider a Brazilian butt lift.

The Brazilian butt lift is a cosmetic procedure that offers a permanent solution to achieving more shapely buttocks.

This procedure is a specialized fat transfer procedure that improves the size and shape of the buttocks without the use of implants. Excess fat is removed from the abdomen, hips, lower back or thighs with liposuction, and then a portion of the fat is strategically injected into the buttocks.

Dr. McLain can improve the proportions of the entire lower body with Brazilian butt lift surgery, helping you lose fat in common problem areas while enhancing the buttocks. The results can last for many years to come.

The shape and proportion of your buttocks are largely determined by genetics. Your skeletal structure and how your body stores fat will also influence the appearance of the lower body. While diet and exercise can help, many times you may still end up with flat buttocks. This is largely due to genetics.

Brazilian butt lift surgery can help overcome genetics and give you the shapely buttocks that you desire. The procedure will also help reshape surrounding areas such as the hips and lower back, and thighs.

You may consider Brazilian butt lift surgery to:

  • Make your clothes fit better
  • Reduce fat pockets on your hips, thighs, or belly
  • Enhance the curves of your lower body
  • Give a more youthful, shapely appearance to your lower body
  • Enhance your overall proportions

Despite its name, Brazilian butt lift surgery will not address saggy, excess skin on the buttocks or thighs. Dr. McLain will talk with you about adding thigh or buttock lift surgery to address these issues.

If you want to change the shape of your buttocks to have a more shapely figure, schedule a consultation with Dr. McLain. He will discuss all of your options as well as what you may expect your results to be with Brazilian butt lift surgery.

Skin Removal Surgery

Loose or hanging skin tissue can become bothersome for some people due to both cosmetic and physical reasons. You may experience discomfort, chafing, skin irritation, and frequent infections in areas where excess skin is present. You may consider a skin removal surgery to restore your attractive, youthful appearance, and obtain relief from physical discomfort.

Many people choose a skin removal cosmetic surgery after a massive weight loss or following multiple pregnancies or simply due to the aging process. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides skin removal surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding communities.

Loose Skin Problems after Weight Loss

Following a bariatric surgery, you may be able to achieve a dramatic weight loss over a short period of time. However, your skin may have become inelastic or overstretch, and as a result, it will tend to appear droopy in certain areas that have deflated after weight loss. The abdomen, breasts, buttocks, thighs, and upper arms are commonly affected by this condition.

It can be difficult to eliminate this excess loose skin simply through diet and exercise. Fortunately, skin removal surgery is a time-tested and well-recognized cosmetic procedure to get rid of this problem and restore a tighter, smoother skin appearance.

Panniculectomy

Loose and excessive skin tissue in the lower abdominal area may sometimes begin to hang above the pubic line and even go up to the thighs. Panniculectomy is a skin removal procedure to reduce the pannus or hanging skin and restore a pleasing appearance. The procedure can be combined with tummy tuck, depending on your unique needs.

Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck cosmetic surgery is a popular procedure to remove sagging skin and tighten the underlying loose abdominal muscles. You can achieve a firm and youthful looking abdomen with this procedure. The location and length of the incision (the tummy tuck technique) will depend on the amount of loose skin to be removed. Raising of the belly button to a more youthful level may also be involved in this surgery.

Brachioplasty

Brachioplasty or arm lift cosmetic procedure is often a part of a comprehensive skin removal surgery. It will eliminate sagging skin from the underside of the upper arms. Your surgeon will create an incision across the bottom of your upper arm or within the underarm. This will be decided according to the amount of excess skin that must be removed. Your surgeon will firm up the supportive tissue and give shape to your arm contours through the incisions.

Thighplasty

A thigh lift or thighplasty procedure will remove excess skin and stubborn fat deposits to reshape, contour, and firm up the inner or outer thighs. A crescent shaped incision may be placed to remove sagging skin from your upper inner thighs. Based on your skin removal needs, your surgeon may also recommend a medial or lateral thigh lift, or a combination of different techniques.

Buttock Lift

Sagging or loose skin in your rear end can be successfully removed with a Brazilian butt lift or a traditional buttock lift surgery. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and nearby areas for skin removal surgery.
