Breast Augmentation: Improving Your Overall LookAre you ready to make some changes to your overall look as swimsuit season approaches? Are your breasts sagging and not looking as youthful as they once did? Breast Augmentation may be the answer.

Breast augmentation, commonly referred to as a boob job, involves using breast implants or fat transfer to increase the size of your breasts. The procedure can achieve a more rounded breast shape, improve asymmetry in the breasts and restore breast volume. Breast volume is often lost after significant weight loss or pregnancy.

Breast augmentation involves placing implants into the breasts for a larger, fuller looking chest area. Implants can be used for reconstructive purposes, such as after a mastectomy for breast cancer, or for cosmetic reasons.

What breast augmentation surgery can do:

  • Improve balance of breast and hip contours
  • Increase fullness and projection of your breasts
  • Enhance your self-image and self-confidence.

Sometimes, to help correct sagging, Dr. McLain will perform a breast lift – or Mastopexy in addition to augmentation to give you a more pleasing look.

There are two types of breast implants: Silicone gel, and saline

Silicone gel-filled implants are silicone shells filled with a plastic gel. Many women say that these types of implants feel more natural, however, they can post more problems should an implant develop a leak.

Saline implants are silicone shells filled with sterile salt water. Some are pre-filled, some are filled during the surgical procedure. Dr. McClain will discuss this with you at your consultation.

Both saline and silicone implants come in different sizes and have either smooth or textured shells.

Before your breast implant procedure, you will meet with Dr. McClain for a medical evaluation. You may talk with him about your own expectations, as well as ask him any questions you may have about the procedure and recovery period.

Dr. McClain and his staff will work with you to ensure that your expectations are attainable so that you will be pleased with your new breasts.

Breast Augmentation or Breast Lift | Huntsville Cosmetic SurgeryBreast Augmentation or Breast Lift – Which is Right for You?

Have you decided to make changes to your body? Perhaps you have noticed the changes from aging, or you have finished having babies and breast feeding – you are ready to give your bust line a rejuvenation. But how to proceed is the question – a breast lift or breast implants?

Breast augmentation, commonly referred to as a boob job, involves using breast implants or fat transfer to increase the size of your breasts. The procedure can achieve a more rounded breast shape, improve asymmetry in the breasts and restore breast volume. Breast volume is often lost after significant weight loss or pregnancy.

What breast augmentation surgery can do:

  • Improve balance of breast and hip contours
  • Increase fullness and projection of your breasts
  • Enhance your self-image and self-confidence.

What breast augmentation cannot do:

  • Correct severely drooping breasts

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.

With aging, weight loss or after pregnancy, the nipple area becomes enlarged. A breast lift will reduce this, as well.

What a breast lift can do:

  • Rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is more youthful and uplifted.

What a breast lift cannot do:

  • Change the size of your breasts
  • Round out the upper part of your breasts

Oftentimes, breast lifting can be done at the same time as breast augmentation.

Dr. McLain will consult with you on your goals for a more youthful appearance. He will help you decide what will work best for you – breast augmentation, breast lift -or both.

Breast Implants

One of the most basic decisions you need to take before your breast augmentation surgery is picking the breast implants. While size, shape and type of the implants are important, you also need to consider the implant profile. Breast implant profile refers to the kind of forward projection it will provide from the chest wall.

McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides breast augmentation to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Popular Breast Implant Profiles

Moderate profile implants

Moderate profile implants have a wide base and do not offer a lot of forward projection. They are flatter than other profile types, but offer the most natural looking breasts. They are suitable for women with regular-sized chests and shoulders. Discuss with your surgeon if you are a candidate for these implants for your breast enhancement plastic surgery.

Moderate plus profile implants

These are between moderate and high profile where forward projection is concerned. They have a slightly narrower base as compared to moderate profile implants. Women with these implants get a little extra fullness in their upper breast poles. The look is similar to wearing a permanent push-up bra.

Broad chested and wide framed women are suitable for these implants. They can fill out their breast dimensions without having to get excessively large implants. The implant looks natural in thin, flat chested women as well. However, size options may get limited in narrow chested women who may find the base diameter of the implant too wide.

High profile implants

High profile breast implants offer more enhanced forward projection. These implants have narrow base diameters and provide more fullness in the upper poles. This helps in creating extra cleavage. Breasts appear rounder and fuller in high profile implants, which are ideally recommended for women with narrow chest walls.

High profile implants offer more forward projection as compared to moderate profile implants. They have more anterior projection and provide dramatic results. They are best suited for women looking for rounder and forward projecting breasts that don’t necessarily need to appear natural.

Ultra-high or Extra-high profile implants

Ultra-high breast profiles offer the least natural shape and appear the roundest. They have the smallest base diameters for creating excessive projection. There is superior upper pole fullness and more cleavage. However, the implants are not for everyone. They are suited for women desiring unnatural, projecting, and very large breasts.

Picking the Right Breast Implant Profile

Your cosmetic surgeon will consider several factors when helping you pick the right implant profile. They will evaluate the existing breast size and shape of your body first. They will also measure the existing width of your breasts. This is done to ensure the implants chosen provide the most natural-looking results.

Generally, surgeons recommend choosing a size marginally smaller than the existing width for natural appearing results. Choosing implants is personal decision. But you can use breast implant sizers at the surgeon’s office to better visualize the expected results from your breast augmentation cosmetic surgery.

Breast Augmentation Mastopexy (BAM)

Many women want to increase the size of their breasts or enhance its shape for cosmetic purposes. You can correct sagging breasts and enhance their shape while addressing other issues with a breast augmentation mastopexy procedure. BAM essentially combines two highly popular breast surgeries in one: breast lift and augmentation.

The combined procedure is often more effective in creating more comprehensive and natural looking results. Your surgeon will determine during the initial consultation whether you make for an ideal candidate for this cosmetic plastic surgery or not.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides breast augmentation mastopexy to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Surgical Technique for BAM

Breast augmentation mastopexy procedure utilizes several different plastic surgery techniques. Your surgeon will use the most appropriate techniques to attain your individual aesthetic goals and requirements. The cosmetic surgeon will also take into account your breast anatomy and extent of droopiness while determining the best technique. Incisions don’t need to be large in cases where breast sagginess is limited.

Your surgeon will place particular attention on creating incisions in discreet locations so that any scarring is minimally visible. You should be able to wear clothes of your choice, including bikinis and low cut tops following your surgery (after post-surgical healing).

Incisions are usually placed in the following ways:

  • Breast crease incisions: Your surgeon will make the incision in your breast fold. This site is concealed making it a popular choice.
  • Peri-areolar incision: Incisions in this case are made around the areola borders.
  • Vertical incision: Your surgeon will make a vertical incision starting from the areolar bottom all the way to the breast fold. Scars can be a bit more conspicuous in this incision as compared to others.

Breast Augmentation Mastopexy Surgical Procedure

You will be placed under general anesthesia for the purpose of the surgery, which usually takes 2 to 3 hours. Once you are under anesthesia, the surgeon will start making the incisions. Generally, the breast implants are placed before addressing droopy breasts.

Your surgeon’s primary goal will be to use the same incisions for inserting implants and lifting the breasts. This will help reduce scarring while making the surgery less invasive. The surgeon will excise excess breast tissue to create a pocket in your breasts. This is where the implants get placed under your pectoral muscles.

The plastic surgeon will make sure the breast shape and symmetry is according to the pre-surgery plan. The next step is to trim any loose skin and reshape the breasts. This is done by manipulating the breast tissue. If you want your nipple-areola complex will also be resized and repositioned during this step to make them appear more youthful and natural.

The surgeon will proceed to close the incisions with sutures once the surgery is completed. Your breasts will be wrapped in bandages and temporary drain tubes may be used to collect excess fluids for a few days. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and nearby areas for breast augmentation mastopexy.

Breast Augmentation: Bigger or Smaller? | Huntsville Cosmetic SurgeryBreast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries that women undergo each year. Whether you want larger breasts, or you would like to have a smaller chest, you will want to do your research.

Exchanging old implants for a smaller, or larger size is a not uncommon request. While you may be pleased with the size of your initial implants, due to physical changes, you may want to consider smaller or larger implants to find a more aesthetically pleasing body contour.

Breast implants can last from 10 to 15 years and sometimes longer. But here are some reasons that you might consider having new implants:

  • Implant rupture
  • Hardening of the capsule around the implant
  • The implant drops, or becomes out of place
  • Swelling
  • Asymmetry

Dr. Landon McLain says “In my practice and nationally, the most common reason to revisit a breast implant is implant malposition.  Over time, some implants will drop too low or drift laterally.  This can usually be repaired with an internal lift that may preclude the need for a mastopexy and the addition of new scars.”

Dissatisfaction with the look of your implants is one reason some women consider an implant exchange. Some others include:

  • Desire to switch from textured to smooth implants
  • The need for a breast lift
  • An issue with the initial breast implants
  • Changing the implant from saline to silicone
  • Aging

Breast tissue sagging as we age, or after weight loss or gain is another reason that many women may consider breast augmentation. With aging, the body produces less collagen and elastin. A breast lift can help correct sagging from pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well.

Speaking with your board-certified cosmetic surgeon is the best way to make a decision that will work for you and your body. This will also ensure that you achieve the best aesthetic results.   If you’re interested in a breast augmentation, please give us a call.  Dr. McLain will be happy to give you all your options.

en bloc Capsulectomy breast implant removal

Choose a Facelift Surgeon You can Trust | Huntsville | AthensTo understand en bloc capsulectomy or total capsulectomy surgery, you need to be familiar with a capsule, which is the scar tissue that grows around an implant. The development of this scar tissue is a natural reaction of the body when the implant was placed in the breast.

In most cases, the scar tissue will not change in the way your breast implant looks or feels. When removing the implants, it is always important to take this capsule (scar tissue) into consideration.

If the implants are being taken out permanently, a total capsulectomy can help in safer healing and recovery of the tissue. In the en bloc capsulectomy technique, the whole capsule is taken out together with the implant in one single piece.

The implant will remain within the capsule during the entire surgery. An experienced cosmetic surgeon will withdraw the old capsule via en bloc capsulectomy only when they consider it an appropriate and safe option for the patient.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides breast implant removal to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

When is En Bloc Capsulectomy Not Recommended?

There are some situations where an en bloc capsulectomy surgery cannot be undertaken or may not be the most suitable option. If the capsular tissue is very delicate and thin to take out in one piece, the surgeon may not perform en bloc capsulectomy. Instead, they will take out as much of the capsule as possible along with the implant and then carefully remove the scar tissue that is left behind.

Another condition where the surgeon may not carry out the en bloc capsulectomy is when the capsule adheres tightly to some critical tissues. For instance, if scar tissue is found closely enveloped around the rib cage, taking out the full capsule could injure the lungs.

In these cases, some portions of the capsule will be left inside at the time of implant removal. Your breast surgeon will make sure that all required steps are taken to allow good healing, including sterilizing the remnants of the capsule. In general, the remaining capsule does not cause any health problems to the patient.

The Process of Implant Removal

The breast explantation surgery is carried out in an outpatient setting at an accredited surgical facility. The procedure requires the patient to be under general anesthesia and the entire surgery will last for about two hours. The procedure can usually be performed using the incision sites made during your original breast augmentation surgery.

In certain cases, the surgeon may require to make an extra incision for total removal of the capsule. The surgeon will remove the entire capsule that has developed around the implant and take it out as a single entity. After the removal of both the capsules, the incision sites will be closed, and the breasts will be covered with bandages and a compression garment.

Removal of implants helps to restore the natural aesthetics of the patient, but it may produce some changes to soft tissue. Drooping or sagging of the breasts may occur in some cases after the procedure because the skin stretches itself to accommodate the implant. If the patient does not wish to get new implants, there could be other ways to address this issue.

The first is a breast lift surgery, which can be performed along with implant removal. The procedure involves elimination of excess loose skin and relocating the nipple and areola to build a perkier breast. The second choice is to use fat grafting to provide volume to the breast, partly replacing what was created by the breast implant, but with a natural and subtler effect.

Recovery after the Implant Removal

If you are not overweight, in good general health, and not a smoker, your recovery should not take long and you may be able to return to your regular activities in less than a week. You can expect some postoperative swelling which usually goes away within the first four weeks after the surgery.

Breast augmentation cosmetic surgery is a procedure that many women seek today to enhance their breast appearance.

With this surgery it is possible to create larger, more appealing breasts by increasing the size of naturally small breasts, creating more symmetrical breasts or making the breasts appear more voluptuous.

Sometimes women seek breast augmentation following a mastectomy to restore their breast appearance and self-confidence. An expert breast surgeon will carefully evaluate a woman as a candidate for breast augmentation surgery and provide her with the information to make an educated choice.

Focused cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides various aesthetic procedures for the breast, body and face, including breast augmentation, to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and other towns and cities in this majestic part of the southeast.

Reasons for Choosing Breast Enhancement

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will try to understand the woman’s reasons to undergo breast augmentation surgery.

Only the candidate herself can best describe her reasons for choosing this procedure as well as discuss the aspects of her breasts that she finds undesirable. Women usually undergo breast enhancement surgery for the following reasons:

  • Acquiring a more voluptuous and attractive figure
  • Restoration of fullness in the breasts after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Making the breasts appear more symmetrical
  • Enhancing the size of the breasts proportionally to the rest of the body
  • Rectifying birth defects in one or both breasts
  • Correcting micromastia by enhancing the breast size
  • Recreating one or both breasts following mastectomy
  • Improving a woman’s self-confidence and body image

Ideal breast augmentation candidates have reasonable expectations, a positive mind frame, and clear cosmetic goals.

Medical Requirements

Breast augmentation is a significantly invasive cosmetic procedure, which requires the patient to be in good overall health. The surgeon will assess the patient’s medical records in detail and understand her breast anatomy and skin elasticity in the breast region as well as order specialized mammograms if required.

It is important for the patient to disclose all pertinent information regarding her present health condition to the surgeon. This will help the surgeon make the necessary adjustments to the breast augmentation surgery.

The patient should have stable and moderate body weight and should not have any existing infections, cancerous or pre-cancerous tissues in the breasts. Furthermore, she should not be pregnant or breastfeeding.

Lifestyle Requirements

In case the patient smokes, the surgeon will ask her to quit smoking entirely for a specific period before and after the breast augmentation procedure. In addition, the surgeon may alter her schedule of prescription and non-prescription meds in discussion with the prescribing doctor.

The patient should stay well hydrated before the breast surgery as well as follow a balanced diet with more focus on lean proteins to support the recovery process. She should consult a nutritionist to receive the best dietary guidance.

Age Requirements

The candidate should be above 21 years of age to be eligible to receive silicone breast implants according to FDA stipulations. In the case of saline implants, this minimum age requirement is reduced to 18 years.

Your Breast Revision Cosmetic Surgery Consultation | Huntsville | DecaturBreast revision surgery is a major procedure, which must be preceded by a thorough pre-operative consultation. A good consultation will create the foundation for a successful surgery. During the consultation, the surgeon and the patient can come to a decision about the breast revision surgery technique that will be in the best interests of the patient.

A proactive involvement of the patient in the consultation process is important to ensure that an appropriate surgery plan is prepared that incorporates her personal goals and needs. The consultation will also provide an opportunity to the patient to ask questions and clear any concerns or doubts about the procedure as well as the surgeon’s practice.

Patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and other communities and neighborhoods in the golden and triumphant state of Alabama have an opportunity to receive breast revision surgery from Dr. Landon McLain of McLain Surgical Arts.

Determining Candidacy

The surgeon will review the patient’s previous health records and examine her current medical condition at the time of pre-operative consultation. They may also order specialized mammograms in a few cases.

The surgeon will like to ensure that the patient does not suffer from any underlying condition that could place her at risk during or after the breast revision surgery. The patient’s breast anatomy, skin type and skin elasticity in the breast area will also be evaluated.

Major Decisions

Breast revision surgery requires a few important decisions that will be taken during the consultation. These will include the decision about implant removal or implant replacement, whether it will include breast lift as an additional surgery, the selection of the new implants, the location of incisions, and the placement of implants above or below the pectoral muscle.

Removal or Replacement

Breast revision surgery may involve breast implant removal or replacement, depending on the patient’s needs. The surgeon will discuss the pros and cons of both options during the consultation with the patient. In a majority of cases, patients choose breast implant replacement. But sometimes for medical reasons or aesthetic preferences, the patient want only implant removal.

Implant Selection

In case of breast implant replacement surgery, the patient will have to choose the size and type of new implants. If the new implants are larger in size than the previous ones, the surgeon will have to create a new breast pocket to accommodate them. During the consultation, they will apprise the patient of the invasiveness of the procedure and the risks, downtime and discomfort that may be associated with it.

Combining with Breast Lift

Breast revision surgery may sometimes be performed in conjunction with breast lift. This is particularly common when the patient only wants breast removal surgery. During the consultation, the surgeon will evaluate the patient’s skin elasticity in the breast area to make the appropriate recommendation.

Pre- and Post-op Instructions

During the consultation, the patient will receive instructions about a few precautions to be taken during the pre- and post-surgical phases. The patient will also be required to avoid smoking for a few weeks as advised by the surgeon. The committed and outstanding Dr. Landon McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and nearby areas for breast revision surgery.
